The Offshore Legal Professionals Survey 2025-2026: What Offshore Legal Careers Look Like in Practice

Key Takeaway

The Agency Legal Talent’s Offshore Legal Professionals Survey 2025–2026, based on candidates we placed offshore in 2025, shows that lawyers who relocate typically find their roles and lifestyles compare very favourably with their previous onshore experience. 93% of respondents reported improvements in work quality, workload and career progression alongside high income satisfaction compared with their onshore role. 100% said they would recommend moving offshore and reported satisfaction with The Agency Legal Talent’s service. Lifestyle and work-life balance were cited as the leading motivations for making the move offshore.

--------------------------------------

Offshore legal careers are often discussed in broad terms - high-quality work, tax-free (or low tax salaries) and better lifestyle - but hard data on what lawyers actually experience day-to-day is harder to come by.

The purpose of The Agency Legal Talent’s Offshore Legal Professionals Survey is to change that: it shares a transparent, anonymised snapshot of offshore lawyers' income, work quality, workload and career progression satisfaction (relative to prior onshore roles), and motivations for making the move.

This article sets out the headline findings from the survey, based directly on the data.

Who Are Offshore Legal Professionals?

In this article, “offshore legal professionals” refers to lawyers and legal support staff whom The Agency Legal Talent has relocated to established international finance centres - including the Cayman Islands, Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey), Bermuda and BVI - where they work in locally admitted law firms advising on cross-border matters. These commonly include investment funds, corporate/M&A, finance, regulatory, disputes, employment and private client.

Work Quality, Workload and Career Progression Offshore

Respondents were asked how their offshore role compared to their previous onshore position as a single overall assessment covering work quality, workload and career progression.

The results were clear:

  • 93% of respondents reported that their offshore role offered better work quality, improved workload and stronger career progression compared with their previous onshore position.

Qualitative responses highlighted continued exposure to complex, high-value matters while working within more supportive team structures.

One respondent noted they were working on “very high profile / high value work”, while also experiencing a more collaborative working environment, more approachable partners and lower billable-hours expectations than in their previous role.

Income Satisfaction Offshore

Respondents were asked to rate their income satisfaction compared with their previous onshore role on a 1-5 scale.

Overall income satisfaction was high again across our candidates, with 93% rating their satisfaction at 3/5 or above.

While respondents showed high satisfaction with their income, the qualitative responses and motivations data suggest that salary is rarely the primary driver of an offshore move.

Why Lawyers Move Offshore

When asked to select their single primary motivation, the most common answers were lifestyle/new environment and work-life balance.

However, qualitative responses showed that relocation decisions are rarely driven by a single factor. Respondents frequently described a combination of motivations, including international experience, career progression, compensation and broader life satisfaction.

The results suggest that offshore legal careers appeal because they provide a different structure for practising law at a high level - combining sophisticated work with a lifestyle that many respondents felt was more sustainable and rewarding.

Would Offshore Lawyers Recommend the Move?

Respondents were asked whether they would recommend working offshore to other legal professionals.

Responses include:

"I would recommend working offshore to other legal professionals as you tend to work alongside the best firms across a multitude of jurisdictions. Accordingly the deal size and quality of work tends to be better, even if your portion of the transaction is smaller. Overall, work life balance is better and the community feel in offshore jurisdictions is second to none!"

"Almost the same money as Biglaw, with a lot less work and getting to live in the beach"

“I have more life satisfaction and really enjoy the type of work I am doing.”

“I am still working on very high profile / high value work, with a good mix of matters. The partners are more relaxed than my previous onshore role, the billable hours requirement is less and I am paid significantly more than my previous salary.”

“Great experience and international exposure, tax-free salary and travel opportunities.”

Across the survey, the overall tone of responses was overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of respondents indicating they would recommend offshore work to other lawyers depending on their career stage and professional priorities.
