Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory comprising of three islands – Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman – with Grand Cayman serving as the commercial and legal hub.

Home to around 91,000 residents representing more than 130 nationalities, The Cayman Islands are a diverse and cosmopolitan community of Caymanians, Jamaicans, Britons, Irish, Filipinos, Canadians, Americans, and many others. This creates an extremely welcoming community for professionals from all over the world.

Situated in the Caribbean Sea just an hour from Miami and a 12-hour direct flight from London Heathrow, the islands offer excellent connectivity to global financial centres while maintaining a relaxed Caribbean character.

Underpinned by English common law and supported by modern, business-focused legislation, Cayman offers lawyers a stable, sophisticated, and internationally respected environment to build their careers, all within a world-class tropical setting.

World-Class Legal Work

The Cayman Islands is a major international financial centre and the world's leading domicile for investment funds. Legal professionals typically work as local counsel on high-volume, sophisticated matters that are pivotal in the wider transaction.

The practice emphasises legal expertise over project management, with more predictable workflows and less intensive hours. Lawyers work with the same calibre of clients as New York, London, or Hong Kong on matters of comparable value and complexity.

Work-Life Balance

The Caribbean setting fosters a genuine respect for work-life balance which sets the Cayman Islands apart. With median annual target hours of 1,600 across international firms, legal professionals can advance their careers and tackle sophisticated, challenging matters while enjoying significantly more personal time than traditional City firms typically allow.

This balanced approach enables lawyers to fully embrace Cayman’s exceptional lifestyle offerings without compromising their professional development or the quality of their legal work.

Lifestyle & Location

Extracurriculars

Despite being just 8 x 20 miles, Grand Cayman offers a well-rounded lifestyle. The island provides diverse recreational opportunities, from water sports like snorkelling, scuba diving and kitesurfing to land-based activities including pickleball leagues, botanical garden walks, and sunset social gatherings.

Lawyers find themselves settling into island life quickly, thanks to Cayman’s diverse community. The local culture embodies ‘Caymankind’: warmth and friendliness of the people, love of community and pace of life. Which is added to by the substantial expatriate population.

As a financial services hub, the island attracts like-minded professionals, producing a dynamic community of industry peers. The abundance of restaurants, bars, and cultural events, combined with the island’s inherently relaxed atmosphere, makes building meaningful connections and maintaining an active social life effortless.

While the Cayman Islands delivers exceptional quality of life, those seeking a metropolitan pace should note that island living offers a different rhythm, though Miami remains just an hour’s flight away for those craving big-city energy.

Weather

Grand Cayman enjoys consistently pleasant temperatures, averaging 28°C in winter and 32°C during the summer months; ideal conditions for an active, outdoor-focused lifestyle. Modern infrastructure ensure comfort year-round, with air conditioning standard across all residential and commercial properties.

The Atlantic hurricane season (June-November) is well-managed through established protocols. Major law firms maintain comprehensive evacuation procedures and stringent building codes ensure all structures meet rigorous hurricane-resistance standards. Notably, the island has only experienced one major hurricane in the last two decades.

Travel Connectivity

Grand Cayman maintains excellent air links throughout the Americas and beyond. Direct flights connect the island to 28 international flight destinations including the likes of Miami, New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Panama, Jamaica and London, ensuring seamless access to business centres and leisure destinations.

Owen Roberts International Airport’s central location in the capital, George Town, means quick travel time to and from flights, perfect for maximising both business trips and weekend getaways.

Practical Considerations

Infrastructure, Services and Everyday Living

Schooling

The Cayman Islands has excellent schools for children at preschool age all the way through to secondary school and university. There are 43 preschools and 27 private and government primary and secondary schools spread across the three islands offering a range of curriculums, including UK and US systems with high teaching standards.

The Government requires all expatriates employed within the private sector to educate their children in private schools as there are limited Government school places available. There are options to reduce fees, such as asking the school for financial assistance or choosing a less expensive school. The advice is to reserve your child’s place as early as possible to ensure that they have a space.

Public transport

There is a relatively good public bus system in Grand Cayman that currently has nine bus routes and 125 designated bus shelters. All the routes run to and from the central bus depot in George Town. The best way to catch a bus is to wave one down from the side of the road, most will beep to check if you need picking up.

Healthcare

Grand Cayman maintains exceptional healthcare standards with over 200 registered medical facilities and 700+ registered practitioners, including specialists trained at leading international institutions. The island's advanced hospital infrastructure and rigorous Health Services Authority oversight ensure world-class care, with established medical evacuation protocols to Miami for specialised treatments.

International law firms provide comprehensive health insurance covering individual and family needs, including routine care, specialist consultations, and medical evacuation.

Accommodation

Rent can vary widely on the island depending on location. As a general guide, a one-bedroom house on Seven Mile Beach can be between $3000-4250, George Town/ South Sound varies between $1500-2900, West Bay can be between $1500-2200 and Bodden Town is often a lot cheaper at $950-1600.

Renumeration

Offshore law firms in the Cayman Islands offer attractive compensation packages, with 3PQE lawyers currently earning base salaries around USD$165,000. The absence of income tax means professionals retain their entire salary, significantly enhancing take-home pay. Firms also pay annual bonuses consistently, and they range between 10-30%, depending on the firm and level of seniority. Some smaller firms even offer lucrative commission structures.

While cost of living in the Cayman Islands historically exceeds other financial hubs, recent worldwide inflation has narrowed this gap considerably. Legal professionals relocating from the UK, Australia or New Zealand typically discover substantially increased disposable income despite higher living costs.

Work Permits & Admission

All foreign nationals (including UK mainland nationals) must apply for and obtain a work permit. Whilst the requirements are relatively straight forward, a work permit application usually takes between one to four months to obtain, depending on the type of work permit application.

Lawyers from certain other commonwealth jurisdictions are automatically eligible for admission as a Cayman Islands Attorney-at-Law once they have three years post qualification experience, and employment and a work permit secured. There are no exams, but a relatively straight-forward admission ceremony at the Cayman Islands Grand Court once the lawyer is physically present on island.
